Train tickets in China –Track of tears

February 1st, 2010 by Bob Liu

Every year before the spring festival, I have problems getting the train ticket back to home from Beijing. I had to go to the scalper or buy an air ticket, which would cost me extra 150-500 RMB. These things also happened to my friends and colleagues. The terrible experience of buying the ticket is the most distinctive features in China. Here are some useful Chinese words and expression about train tickets.

People would like to choose the fastest and the most comfortable train back to home.

动车组dòng chē zǔ (Multiple Unit)

特快列车tè kuài liè chē (Express train)

临时旅客列车lín shí lǚ kè liè chē (Makeshift passenger train)

The train tickets are divided into four classes: 硬座yìng zuò (hard seat), 软座ruǎn zuò (soft seat),  硬卧yìng wò (semi-cushioned berth), 软卧ruǎn wò (cushioned berth).

For most people they even feel lucky to buy a站票zhàn piào (standing-room ticket) to return home.

When you buy the sleeper ticket, you may choose the right berth for you: 上铺shàng pū (upper berth/ sleeper), 中铺zhōng pū (middle berth / sleeper), 下铺xià pū (lower berth /sleeper).

After you have choose the right train and the classes, you have to go to the 火车站huǒ chē zhàn (railway station) or 订票点dìng piào diǎn (tickets-booking agency/office) to buy your ticket. And the booking clerk may probably tell you that the tickets are sold out.

Then you may turn to the 票贩子piào fàn zǐ or 黄牛huáng niú (ticket scalper) for a more expensive one.

Snowfall in Beijing

January 4th, 2010 by Bob Liu

Yesterday when I woke up in the morning, looking out of my window, I found that everything was dressed with white snow. I haven’t seen such heavy snowfall for nearly ten years. The snowfall often cause bad traffic, which means I have to spend more on my way to work and home tomorrow. All of a sudden, I was excited about yesterday’s snow and retrieved something I lost.

beijing snow

Kids always love snow, because they can have a snowball fight or make a snowman, and more importantly, they do not have to go to school (Students in Beijing primary and high schools have one day off). Whenever it snowed, school authority organized us to clear the snow, which means we could have some fun after the work. I still remember my happiness when playing with snow though with the freezing hands and face. I liked stepping on the softening snow and left my footprints, while my mom always asked me to follow her. As I grown up, the snow is no longer that big, and I do not have the special fancy for it.

Here are some useful words, expressions and idioms concerning snow. Hope you enjoy it!

下雪了!xià xuě le
It is snowing!

snow in beijing

这场雪很大。zhè chǎng xuě hěn dà
It snows heavily.

heavy snow in beijing

我喜欢下雪 wǒ xǐ huān xià xuě
I like snow.

雪花: snowflake
雪球: snowball
大雪: heavy snow
雪崩: avalanche
暴风雪: blizzard

Chinese Chengyu about snow:
雪上加霜 (xuě shàng jiā shuāng) to add frost to snow, which means one misfortunate after another.
雪中送炭 (xuě zhōng song tàn) to send charcoal in snowy weather which means to give timely assistance or help.

Chineseathome’s 2009 round-up

December 25th, 2009 by Chineseathome

2009 was a busy and harvest year for Chineseathome, as we not only enriched our lesson contents our students love, but also developed new features and applications that satisfy their learning needs. After looking back at the lessons, teachers’ review, students’ feedback and feature updates, we’ve assembled a review of all the things we brought you in 2009.

Chinese Characters course was added with new contents (basic conversational phrases and sentences) and renamed as Conversational Chinese for Beginners. This course is the ideal transitional course for students who have finished their Pinyin studies.

Bundled course booking enables students to book their lessons at fixed time in a certain period of time.

In ViSR, Students can now take the lessons with their teachers through live web camera without using any third party software. The photo display area is replaced with video screen if web camera is in use.

Online Chinese assessment database are added with more questions which are based on mock HSK test. And the listening part will be available soon.

Chineseathome offers one-many Chinese learning program (group learning). If some students were not included in an existing lesson, the teacher could also invite the student to attend in the middle of the class.

Our Chinese teachers write their blogs about their teaching experience, Chinese culture, Chinese language and traditional Chinese stories.

Audio integration allows students to communicate in virtual classroom with different audio software such as Skype, Gtalk, telephone and cell phone. They can choose any of the above mentioned software no matter what others use.

16 Chinese teachers with 7, 8 years Chinese language teaching experience have joined Chineseathome. Some of the teachers have worked or studied abroad for several years with a comprehensive understanding of both Chinese culture and western culture.

North China Institute of Science and Technology and Chineseathome establish internship base for the students majoring in teaching Chinese as a second language in NCIST. The students will not only receive the training from Chineseathome’s experienced teachers, but also have the opportunities to participate in the course design with the Chinese linguistic experts.

Although Chineseathome gradually gain its reputation among Chinese language learners, we had a wonderful 2009 to flesh out new content, as well as the increasing needs of the students. In 2010, we planned to bring you the greatest comfort to study Chinese at home with more informative content and new applications.

Chineseathome’s latest feature update – bundled course booking

December 11th, 2009 by Chineseathome

Chineseathome now develops another feature to book lessons for those who have fixed time to learn Chinese. Unlike the flexible course booking feature, the new feature allows our students to book their lessons at certain time each day within a period of time. For example, a student could schedule his or her everyday 11am lessons from Dec. 11 to Dec. 22 at a time. During the booking process, the unscheduled lessons could also be excluded from the booking list.

With the help of this application, our corporate customers benefits greatly from it. They do not have to book their lessons repeatedly, but simply set their Chinese learning schedule from Monday to Friday.

Shanbei Dialect in “Rivers of the North”

November 25th, 2009 by Bob Liu

I have found three interesting words in Shanbei (Northern Shaanxi) Dialect which are widely used in Shaanxi province. “嗑”, “解下”, “相跟上” means “去 (go)”, “懂 (understand)”, “一起走 (go to some place with sb.)”. Let’s put the words into real situation. You may ask “吃饭嗑么?” Do you want to eat? “吃饭去吗?”. One may answer “嗯” yes. If you would like to eat together with him, you should say “相跟上,咱们一块去吧”. Then you ask whether the speaker understand you and may use “我的话,你解下不解下” which means do you understand me “我的话你懂不懂”. He may answer “解下了” I know, OK.

Such conversation appeared in the first chapter of Zhang Chengzhi’s北方的河 (Bĕi fāng de hé/Rivers of the North). The novel based a series of stories on author’s experiences as an “education youth” in the minority regions of China’s northwest. In the story, the main character retraces the path of his youth by returning to the northwest, visiting the major rivers in the region, and dreaming of visiting rivers in other parts of the north.

He first visits Yellow River which is the symbol of Chinese nation, history and culture. With the portrait of the rivers in the north, I feel the power, kindness and indignity of the rivers, and the courage and confidence of the character. He at last visits Yongding River, the largest river to flow through Beijing where he learns and understands the true meaning of perseverance.

I have visited Yongding River. Here is one picture showing the perseverance of the river. Can you feel that?
